Dr Agnes Lawrence Kijazi
Dr. Agnes Kijazi is the Director General of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) since 2011. She rose from the lowest ranks of TMA, which she joined in 1988 as a Meteorological Assistant. Dr. Kijazi is also the Permanent Representative of Tanzania with The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Third Vice President of the Word Meteorological Organization (WMO). On the other hand Dr. Kijazi is a Member and Co-Chair of the United Nations (UN) “10 Member Group in support of Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM)”for achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She is the current Chairperson of the Meteorological Association of Southern Africa (MASA) and She has been a Vice Chairperson of MASA since 2016 to June 2019. At National level Dr. Kijazi has served as a Board member of the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) and Chairperson of Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) of Tanzania Coffee Research Institute (TACRI) among other positions she is holding.
A desire to serve and help her country to better cope with the impact of extreme weather and climate events, motivated Dr. Kijazi to join the undergraduate program in Bachelor of Science in Meteorology at the University of Nairobi which She completed in 2000, and went on to pursue a Master Degree in Environmental Science at the University of Cape Town in 2003. She earned her Doctorate in Meteorology at the University of Cape Town in 2009. She has a number of scientific publications in peer reviewed Journals.
Her career has brought her personal satisfaction, and great achievements to the National and Global Meteorology community including certification of TMA in the new ISO 9001:2015 in Aviation Meteorology in 2017, Tanzania being the third country in Africa to be certified ahead of the September 2018 deadline. She has led the modernization of Tanzania Meteorological Authority where a number of modern meteorological equipment were installed and the quality of service offered to users has improved and also the level of satisfaction for users of TMA services has increased. She has led the transformation of TMA from semi autonomous to an Autonomous institution by coordinating all the preparation for enactment of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority Act No. 2 of 2019. Dr. Kijazi is married and she is a mother of three children.
